Unhappy with her family’s move from the only home she has ever known, Sally McNally is annoyed by almost everything. She finds mom’s encouraging words about “a better life” and “making new friends” very irritating. Adding to her frustrations is her older sister Elizabeth. At 16 years of age, Elizabeth is smart, beautiful, and popular. It seems as though the world revolves around her perfect sister. Although she is only four years older than Sally, Elizabeth treats her like a small child, rolling her eyes or sighing with impatience whenever she speaks.

The only friends that Sally has now are Tabatha, her faithful tabby cat, and Tiffany, her mother’s Persian cat. As her only confidants, she tells them everything – every fear, every injustice, and every perceived slight. After a major blowout with Elizabeth, Sally storms out of the house with her friends Tabatha and Tiffany. When her mother asks where she is going, she replies “Nowhere!” Running into the woods, Sally and her feline pals find themselves caught up in a freakish whirlwind of leaves. When the leaves settle, they quickly learn that things are suddenly very different. The first indication is when they realize that they can no longer see their house. But even more incredible, Tabatha and Tiffany have suddenly acquired the ability to speak! Completely lost, Sally and her friends must use their skills and wits to navigate their way through this strange world. Sally and her feline friends are guided on a most exciting and unbelievable journey to the city of Nowhere by a boy named Jasper, whom they meet along the way, and by a menagerie of animals.
