The Best Edible Wild Plants in Britain: Easy to find & good to eat

Some of the best edible wild plants can be found in Britain but which ones are they? Amanda Scott does the hard work for us and gives us a list of those that are easy to find and good to eat. These plants can be found in gardens throughout Britain. They are often called weeds and many people spend a lot of time and money trying to get rid of them.

Foraging From your Front door (FFF) is the new buzz word these days. Amanda explains how we don’t have to spend hours travelling to find wild food. It’s right on our doorstep and has been all the time. It’s just that we haven’t allowed wild food plants to grow because we class them as weeds ie. plants growing in the wrong place. However, they are not growing in the wrong place. They are growing in the right place. These plants are not only edible, they taste good, are completely free and by allowing them to grow we will help stem the decline of wildlife in Britain.

Most of us don’t eat wild plants regularly for many reasons. We might think they don’t taste good or that it’s too much hard work trying to find them. That need not be the case. Stinging nettles, for example, make a wonderful ‘cooked spinach’. In fact, some say nettles taste better than spinach because it isn’t as slimy. Other plants don’t have to be cooked at all. If your only experience of a wild salad is a plate of dandelion leaves, and it was a very bitter experience, you have to try chickweed. It is mild in flavour and can be used as a straight substitute for lettuce.

This isn’t about wallowing around in mud digging up roots and spending hours peeling, soaking and boiling all sorts of strange smelly plant material only to find that it tastes disgusting. It’s about using a few of the good bits of plants commonly found in Britain’s gardens today. For those that don’t have wild plants there are ways of obtaining them including waiting for them to come (they will) or growing them. Go on. Give it a go. You know you want to.
