Author Interview with P.S. Scott

Gabriel Perez has a dream.

Thirteen-year-old Gabriel wants to become the Ruling Archangel of Celestia. The catch? He doesn’t have wings. And, that means he can’t get into one of the eight prestigious guilds. He spends his days polishing wings, dreaming of going to a guild.

Will Gabriel reach his goal of going to a guild by getting his wings? P.S. Scott, author of Angel Land has dropped into ItsWriteNow.com introduce us to Gabriel and his quest for his wings. P.S, what inspired you to write Gabriel’s tale?

It began as an experiment.

Ooh, I always love to meet authors who have written their book as an experiment, it’s not something you see every day. Experiments are run to help us learn and understand, so I’d love to know what you learnt by working through this experiment. Tell us a little about it.

I think the most important thing I learned is how long it takes to finish a book and polish it to a professional standard. It has taught me a lot of patience. I’ve had to wait for editors, proofreaders, and cover designers to get back to me and being a naturally impatient person, it was hard in the beginning. I feel the entire process took longer than I thought it would, but I’m glad it all came together in the end.

Also, I’ve learned to approach writing more logically and now extensively plot my books before writing them. I think writing Angel Land was a transformational experience and it helped me voice all the thoughts I’d been holding back in my head for ages. It also helped me develop a writing process and plotting structure I can use for my other books.

Being patient can be hard! Did your commitment to getting the book ultimately published mean that you were very energised by the overall process?

Energize, definitely! Angel Land is a book I immensely enjoyed writing. I came out of every writing session with a smile on my face and looking forward to writing again the next day. To me, writing is like meditation. The entire world fades away when I write and I can be in touch with the truest part of myself. I wish I could write more often but being human, I sometimes get burned out.

When you had that focus on that truest part of your self, what messages or ideas started flowing into your book?

The central theme of this book is ‘dreams’. More specifically, the power of dreams. I think this is something everyone can relate to. We all have dreams and aspirations that inspire and motivate us to push forward in life. However, we’ve all experienced the difficulty and struggle it often takes to realize our goals.

The main character Gabriel is an angel who was born without wings and struggles to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming the most powerful angel in his country. In the beginning, it’s an impossible dream and he faces many challenges. Through the course of this book he makes friends, does some pretty reckless things and ends up in hot water several times, but through it all, he keeps going because he can’t give up on his dream. This book follows his journey as he goes through the common pitfalls we experience in realizing our dreams- struggle, desperation, frustration, impatience, elation, friendship, and transformation. I think transformation is also a central theme of the book.

Transformation is really important, but before that, you need a touch of creation. How did your characters come to life?

I think Gabriel is basically a male version of me. Writing this book was very autobiographical

So this book is really about your own experiences and life?

Of course!

That’s awesome. As your life is continuing, can we expect to see the story of Gabriel continue in another instalment? Are you writing more

Yes, I’m currently writing a sequel to Angel Land.

Fantastic! I can’t wait to see what’s next in Angel Land! You’ll have to return to ItsWriteNow.com and update all of us, hopefully in the very near future. Until then, P.S. Scott, I’d like to thank you for chatting with us and giving us a taste of Angel Land.
