Are you looking to improve your leadership skills? Take some advice from great words of wisdom through the ages as collected and showcased in ‘Great Leadership Words of Wisdom’ by Steven Howard, who has joined us today at ItsWriteNow.com to share his book. Steven, what inspired you to share these quotes with the world in the form of this book?
I have been a lifelong collector of quotations and while living in Asia for 21 years I amassed a huge collection of quotes and Asian proverbs which I turned into my Asian Words of Wisdom series. Now that I focus on writing books related to leadership it made sense for me to put together this comprehensive collection of quotations and sayings related to leadership.
What was the central message that you wanted to say to readers who read your book looking to learn more about leadership?
Quotations have long had the power to inspire. There is no innate, overwhelming feeling one can get like that which arises from reading the words and thoughts of others and instinctively knowing how meaningful and applicable they are to one’s own situation.
It is remarkable how the words of statesmen, athletes, coaches, sages, and even philosophers are applicable to today’s modern business world.
Do you feel that these quotes will continue to be relevant in the future, to the same degree, or greater than what they are today?
Most definitely it is something relevant and needed today, but hopefully, it will also have an impact in the future. Our world today needs more inspired leadership, at all levels of society and in all parts of the globe. The wisdom and wise words in this collection of quotes and sayings are leadership can assist and motivate anyone in implementing the art of great leadership and the skills of great leaders.
What do you mean by “great leadership?”
Great leadership is the art of achieving progress through the involvement and actions of others is how I define great leadership. It is placing a focus not only on leading for results but also on leading and developing people. Or, as I often say, “Leadership is about both people and results. If you have to neglect one, neglect the results for these will come in time when you have developed your people.”
What kind of responses have you received from people who have read and considered this message?
People have been amazed how ancient Eastern thinking is so applicable in today’s Western world. But that’s not surprising since humanity has common values, desires, experiences, and thoughts that span all cultural horizons.
What preparation has helped you take these common points and turn into a book that readers want to read?
I have been writing all my life. My first paid writing was as a sports stringer for a local newspaper while in high school. I was hired out of college to be a copywriter at a major electronics company. And I wrote my first book over 20 years ago.
With so many years of practice, I’d love to know where your thoughts focus as you write.
I always focus on my intended audience when I write. I try to put myself in the same mindset that they will likely have when reading one of my works. If I figure out what will likely motivate them to continue reading, chapter after chapter, then I believe my writing is on the right track.
You’ve spent a significant amount of time getting readers to follow you from chapter to chapter. Have you also started to think about developing a brand to help readers follow you from book to book?
Yes, this is something I have deliberately done. My first works were all marketing related, which made sense as I was a marketing consultant for many years. Now I have segued into the leadership space in my writing since the majority of my non-writing revenue comes from creating and delivering leadership development programs.
Cover design is a large part of branding. Who have you used to brand your books through cover design?
Zachery Coleman, a graphic artist living in Phoenix designed the cover. He also designed the cover for one of my previous books, 8 Keys to Becoming a Great Leader: With Leadership Lessons and Tips from Gibbs, Yoda & Capt’n Jack Sparrow.
It’s awesome to hear that you have a designer who has been able to pull the design and in turn your brand through multiple books. And I’m guessing that this book won’t be the last he’ll be working on. What projects are you working on now to add to your brand?
I have drafted the concepts for my next two books on leadership. One will be another collection of quotations related to a specific aspect of leadership. The other needs to remain confidential for the moment.
Two new books to look forward to, that’s great news for readers! Here at It’sWriteNow.com, we always love to hear about new books! Steven, thanks for sharing a taste of new books in the leadership world with us today, and I can’t wait to hear more about your books as they are released!
