Questions About Comments?

| August 29, 2007

A Reader Question:

I’ve noticed, that sometimes when new people comment on my site they give me an explanation of how they found the site first. Kind of an introduction. I’ve noticed that sometimes, when I’m exploring a new site, I will feel hesitant about commenting. So this leads to my first reader question.

Have you ever skipped, commenting on a new site, because of suddenly feeling, shy, awkward, unwelcome, apprehensive, etc.?

    That would be the Riddler.
I have never felt shy to leave a comment. However, I not left a comment on a blog that is written in a language that I don’t understand (ie. Janpanese)

lol I can never remember how I found the blog in the first place, so I just lurk and then, when so moved, jump in and comment, pretending blithely that I am in and everyone should know who I am.

I have never read a blog in another language.

I also tend to see how many comments someone has – if there are several digits I am less forthcoming.

And yes, there are times when I am too shy.

Yes, I feel shy to write the comments as I afraid that my comments are unwelcome for the owner..

But I think comments can give the owner of the blog know a little bit on my blog…

@ Texas_JAM Congratulations you were the first and only person to answer my secret Bonus question. On It’s Write Now, when someone answers a secret bonus question they get a prize, albeit a small one. You have just won a spot on my blogroll. I hope your comfortable there. Every little link counts. Thanks for stopping by. Emma

@ jeanie Just pretending you’ve been there all along is a good strategy. I’ve been intimidated by lots of comments too. Especially if it seems to be a conversation where everyone knows each other. Thank-you for taking the time to comment here. Your always welcome.

@ Keeyit Personally, I love comments. So you are always welcome here. But, I have had those shy feelings too. Thanks for stopping by. It’s one of my goals to encourage interaction as much as possible. Emma

When I see a new face in my blog

I do a thanks for visiting my site !! comment in the owner’s blog

If the post is interesting and has no more than 10 comments, I expand the thank you comment to say something about what I think

And if the site really seems very good, I subscribe to RSS Feed

  6. Emma says:

Yup, it’s the Riddler. I can remember that series!

Hi Ken. Thanks for visiting. πŸ™‚

I agree with jeanie on the number of comments making me less likely to comment. It’s a signal to noise ratio thing.

And, one thing that kind of bothers me is that there are occasionally times when I want to be notified when there are responses to my comment, but being notified is sometimes difficult. I think a subscription to the comments via RSS or email is always good to have.

Well than I’m glad I have that. Also be careful checking the email notification box on super popular blogs.

I did that once on a comment I left on I thought the email notifications would never end.

They weren’t responses to my comment. Just more comments on his site. So watch out. Emma

I don’t get shy making a comment unless the picture of the writer is really cute or something! and yeah, im one of those people who will tell you how I found your site.

Hey Emma. How are you doing? Nice place. Keep up the good work. And, yes, I recognize this guy. He kept me entertained when I was supposed to be doing my homework back in the 60’s.

Hi David. Thanks for visiting. πŸ™‚

Really sometimes certain blogs leave you wordless! Usually I will comment when I can grasp the mind of the blogger. Cheers!

  15. Heather says:

I love visiting new blogs but sometimes do feel to shy to leave comments. I’m really working on it though.

First, I know how valuable comments are to me, and I love when people leave them. So I’m assuming all blog owners feel the same way. Especially when the comment adds value to the discussion.

BTW – Thanks for stopping by Home with Heather today Emma, much appreciated! πŸ™‚
