How To Put No Follow In A Link

| November 9, 2007

Most bloggers are familiar with the no follow attribute. For those who are not, and for my personal reference here is how you add it into a link.

Here is a typical link:

<a href=”http://www.site.com/page.html” mce_href=”http://www.site.com/page.html”>Visit My Page</a>

Here is the same link with the no follow attribute:

<a href=”http://www.site.com/page.html” mce_href=”http://www.site.com/page.html” rel=”nofollow”>Visit My Page</a>

Okay, maybe I’ve been out of the loop too long, but what exactly is this ‘no follow’ thing, and why would you want to use it?

(I may have missed something in my blogging research.. or at least the attempt at researching.) =)

Well, apparently there are times when you may want to link to somebody, so your visitor can click on the link and go to their site. But you don’t want the link to count in the search engines, no backlink or track back or whatever.

Recently Google has been penalizing people for having paid links. For instance if I have an ad on my site that links to your site, and you are paying me to put it on my site, then that would be a paid link. Which could possibly lead to page rank penalties.

Therefore, I can still have your ad on my site, so that when people click on it, they will go to your site, but the no follow will make the link not count in search engines as a back link.

For instance people who have those 125 X 125 ad squares in the right hand corner, use no follow, or else it could be considered a paid link.

Don’t get too concerned about this you can still link to people.Anyway this is why I’ve been looking into all of this lately. I guess I should feel honored kind of a blogger right of passage. πŸ˜‰
    Take Care, Emma
