A Marriage of Mixed Motives

Driven from her elderly uncle’s home by his scheming second wife, Lady Harriet Tarlton finds rushing head-long into marriage with the Duke of Wyverne fraught with difficulties. Beset by misunderstandings, Harriet finds it easier to solve the problems of others than her own.

‘Can you honestly tell me, Uncle, that she loves this man?’
‘If I had not believed it, do you think I would have let her proceed?’
‘And subsequent events have not altered your opinion?’
The Earl shook his head sadly. ‘I can no longer be sure of anything where Harriet is concerned.
I always thought of her as in some way promised to you.’
