Where Do I Begin?

| June 15, 2007

I would like to create a blog. Now what? The first thing you need is a topic that your interested in. Start gathering information about your topic. Also begin reading other blogs to get an idea of how they work and how you can set up your information the most efficiently.

It would be wonderful if you knew HTML, PHP, CSS and were an expert on web design. It would probably be best to get an overview of some of the tools and terms used in blogging. But don’t get hung up on learning every single thing.

You can learn as you go, and you will. Also don’t get hung up on being a perfectionist. As scary as it may be, just diving in, will be the best way to start. You could spend years studying, buying books, and taking courses and still not know everything.

Quit procrastinating and don’t let perfectionism hold you back. Decide on a domain name. Find a web host. I use Dreamhost.

Download wordpress. Find a suitable theme. This is the point where you will be reading the wordpress documentation and learning more than you ever thought you needed to know. Once you have the format set up.

You can start adding content. This is the point where I’m at now. Which is exciting, because I have so many ideas, it’s hard to concentrate on one article at a time. My next steps after I’ve created some worthwhile content, are to actually get some readers.

This is where networking with other bloggers. Marketing my blog and SEO come in. More on these topics later. Finally I have some future plans about monetization, which I hope to do in a tasteful and non disruptive kind of way.

We’ve all seen the sites plastered with flashing ads everywhere. Enough said. This is actually the most exciting part. Not only will it judge the effectiveness of my efforts, but it will bring in more traffic because the hottest blog trend right now seems to be how to make money on the web.

So for now, this is the point I’m at. If I can do it so can you. Please stay tuned for more in depth discussions of blog techniques and writing tips.
